The Garden began as a room where women could speak and be heard. That is still the whole
idea. Everything the Institute runs is a version of that room, built so that the price of
admission never decides who gets in.
Those rooms take several forms now. Conversations that change how people see a difficult
subject. Publications and a press that carry new work to readers. Courses in the craft of
writing and in the practice of leading other writers toward theirs.
Our community practices deliberative conversations, sociocratic decision making, and
collective projects for the benefit of all engaged members. We share wisdom through book
clubs, Kitchen Table Talks, free and paid courses, and collaborative work.
